영생에 이르는 의의 종이 되게 하시려고 우리를 부르시는 하나님 ㅡ “너희 육신이 연약하므로 내가 사람의 예대로 말하노니 전에 너희가 너희 지체를 부정과 불법에 내주어 불법에 이른 것 같이 이제는 너희 지체를 의에게 종으로 내주어 거룩함에 이르라 죄의 삯은 사망이요 하나님의 은사는 그리스도 예수 우리 주 안에 있는 영생이니라” (로마서 6:19, 23) 우리는 어디에서나 사려 깊고 하나님을 두려워하는 사람들이 깜짝 놀라는 “범죄의 전염병” 속에서 살아가고 있다. 만연되고 있는 부패는 사람의 필력(筆力)으로 묘사할 수 없다. 매일 정치적 투쟁, 증회(贈賄 뇌물수수), 사기 등이 새롭게 폭로되고 있다. 매일 폭력과 불법, 인간의 고통에 대한 무관심, 사람의 생명에 대한 잔인성과 극악한 파멸 등에 대한 가슴 아픈 기록이 전달된다. 매일 정신이상, 살인, 자살 등이 증가되고 있는 것을 보여 준다. 사단의 부하들이 사람들 사이에서 역사하여 마음을 괴롭히고 부패케 하며, 육체를 더럽히고 파괴시키는 활동을 증가시키고 있다는 사실을 누가 의심하겠는가? 현 사회는 성경에 기록된 홍수 전 세계의 상황으로 신속히 빠져 들어가고 있다. 지금도, 소위 그리스도교국이라고 공언하는 지역에서 고대 세계 죄인들의 멸망을 초래한 그 흉악하고 무서운 범죄들이 날마다 저질러지고 있다. 홍수 전에 하나님께서는 백성들이 회개하여 임박한 멸망을 피할 수 있도록 하기 위하여 노아를 보내어 세상을 경고하셨다. 하나님의 재림의 시기가 가까워짐에 따라 주께서는 그 큰 사건을 위하여 준비하도록 당신의 종들을 보내시사 세상을 경고하신다. 많은 사람들이 하나님의 율법을 범하는 생애를 살고 있으며, 이제 그분은 긍휼 가운데서 하나님의 신성한 계명에 순종하도록 그들을 부르고 계신다. 하나님께 대하여 회개하고 그리스도를 믿는 믿음으로 말미암아 그들의 죄를 버리는 자들은 모두 용서를 받는다. God Is Calling Us to Be Servants of Righteousness unto Eternal Life ㅡ “I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:19, 23) We are living in the midst of an “epidemic of crime,” at which thoughtful, God-fearing men everywhere stand aghast. The corruption that prevails, it is beyond the power of the human pen to describe. Every day brings fresh revelations of political strife, bribery, and fraud. Every day brings its heart-sickening record of violence and lawlessness, of indifference to human suffering, of brutal, fiendish destruction of human life. Every day testifies to the increase of insanity, murder, and suicide. Who can doubt that satanic agencies are at work among men with increasing activity to distract and corrupt the mind, and defile and destroy the body? The picture which Inspiration has given of the antediluvian world, represents too truly the condition to which modern society is fast hastening. Even now, in the present century, and in professedly Christian lands, there are crimes daily perpetrated, as black and terrible as those for which the old-world sinners were destroyed. Before the flood, God sent Noah to warn the world, that the people might be led to repentance, and thus escape the threatened destruction. As the time of Christ’s second appearing draws near, the Lord sends His servants with a warning to the world to prepare for that great event. Multitudes have been living in transgression of God’s law, and now He in mercy calls them to obey its sacred precepts. All who will put away their sins by repentance toward God and faith in Christ, are offered pardon. (Christian Service 53)
