진정한 그리스도인들은,

 시련의 날이 이를 때에 하나님의 말씀을 그들의 생애의 법칙으로 삼은 자들이 나타날 것이다.

 여름에는 상록수와 다른 나무를 뚜렷하게 구분할 수 없다.

 그러나 겨울바람이 불어오면 상록수는 변함없이 남아 있지만 다른 나무들은 잎이 떨어져 그 가지가 벌거숭이가 된다.

 이와 같이 지금은 마음이 거짓된 신앙 고백자들을 진정한 그리스도인과 구별할 수 없다.

 그러나 그 구별이 분명히 지어질 때가 이미 절박해 있다.

 반대가 일어나게 되면, 완고와 억압이 다시 기세를 떨치게 되면, 박해의 불길이 일어나게 되면, 반신반의의 위선적인 자들은 흔들리고 믿음을 버릴 것이다.

 그러나 진정한 그리스도인들은 반석과 같이 굳게 설 것이며, 그들의 믿음과 소망은 번영의 때보다 더욱 강하고 더욱 밝아질 것이다.

 When the testing time shall come, those who have made God’s word their rule of life will be revealed.

 In summer there is no noticeable difference between evergreens and other trees; but when the blasts of winter come, the evergreens remain unchanged, while other trees are stripped of their foliage.

 So the falsehearted professor may not now be distinguished from the real Christian, but the time is just upon us when the difference will be apparent.

 Let opposition arise, let bigotry and intolerance again bear sway, let persecution be kindled, and the halfhearted and hypocritical will waver and yield the faith; but the true Christian will stand firm as a rock, his faith stronger, his hope brighter, than in days of prosperity.
